History

Born in the roaring 20s, Jared grew up in the midst of the Great Depression, in rural Oklahoma. His family wasn’t rich to begin with, by any means, but times only got worse. He was pulled out of school to contribute to the work force and support his family. So he spent his short childhood jumping from odd job to odd job, learning trade skills and putting his share of bread on the table. Even so, in 1934, when his mother fell ill, his father was forced to sell his land to pay the doctors, to no avail. The next year, the new landowner struck oil. His father died of a deep depression soon after, leaving Jared penniless and homeless. He was able to find work at the local garage/gas station/general store, and rent a small room above the garage, spending his freemoney on pulp comics and dime novels. He had little time for anything else, let alone women. The first woman he fell for was Melony Grisholm, in 1951. She was night-driving her 1946 Ford Packard through Oklahoma on her way to the fabled Hollywood, and tempted him verily to join her, but it wasn’t until the following May, when she drove back through (to Mexico, this time) that he took her up on the offer. The first night, they made love under the stars. The second, she told him what she was, and gave him a choice. It took him a month to come to a decision.
