‘I know what you have been doing,’ Millie starts again at the taunting voice in her mind and looks around nervously. She is cautious, not paranoid, and sensitive, not psychotic. Someone is speaking to her with words, someone she cannot see. There are only a few people who can do that, and only one who would be so mean about it. “Come out Jack,” she whispers.

“Don’t you mean sire?” Two forms come into view. The one speaking she presumes to be Jack, her sire. He does not look the way he had on the night of her embrace, or on the various other occasions that he has supposedly showed his true self, but that could have been a ruse all the time. Right now he looks like Dr. Strange or something – what a corny thing to look like right now.

She gets a sick look on her face, “Ya, whatever. Who’s your friend?”

“Come now Millie, why are you so hateful to me? I know you are not like this to others.” His tone is sickening with sincerity. Millie tenses and then relaxes, looking the unspeaking extra party up and down. Quickly, she reaches for a hem of garment on the stranger, concentrating on it intently. She is snatched away by her sire before she can get a good sense of the wearer. “Inquisitive as ever, I see. This is a friend of mine. You will be seeing enough of him, so you will have plenty of time to get to know who he is.”

Millie grimaces and jerks herself out of her sire’s reach, concentrating on him. Her eyes widen and she starts to back away. She tries to fade from view but her sire’s eyes remained trained on her. “Y... you are not Jack,”

“Oh but I am, Millie.” Jack replies intently, taking a step closer to her. Her sire’s companion has obviously lost sight of her and looks around in confusion.

“You are not my sire,” she becomes nervous, fidgeting with her hands in front of her.

“You feel the tie to me, you know I am. Perhaps my soul does not look the same to you as it has in the past. Such things change,” He pauses his forward progress. “I have frightened you, yet again. That was not my intent. I have something to tell you, something you have wanted to hear for a very long time, but I will leave you be for now.” With that, both he and his friend vanish.

Millie cries.
