Through the Eyes of Another

Master Yoo stretched and watched his pupil practice in the corner of the room. She had missed an unheard of portion of his class for no explainable reason, yet the headmaster was adamant in his assurance that she could catch up...Yoo was beginning to see that his faith was not misplaced. The young woman's hair was long and curly, with a Vidal Sassoon bounce to it, and had to be pinned back for the exercises...her skin was flawless and her hands were devoid of calluses, telling the tale of a youngster who had never worked a day of hard labor in her life. Still, there was something driven about her, as there had been of the young woman in his class two years ago who had been determined to protect herself after she had been raped. However, this student, Sally Fontenot, seemed even more tireless than the other. He stepped forward to the line and bowed in concert with her, his bald oriental head gleaming under the white flourescent light.

It was time to see if she would be allowed to continue in his Jujitsu class.

He struck forward at her, harder than he had anyone else in his class, determined to truly test this one. Each time, she deflected his moves or compensated by grabbing and twisting him around or to the floor as her grip strengthened with each passing moment until she was on par with the football player in his class...adrenalin, it must have been, for she was very slim of build. Their motions seemed to blur with move and countermove and countercountermove until a misplaced foot gave her the advantage she needed, and he landed on his back from her well placed leg-sweep.

He sat up, watching her for a moment. She stood there, crouch in a defensive stance, not even seeming to pant or sweat....incredible. She leaned forward and offered a hand to help him up, which the sensei was all too happy to accept. He relented and bowed to her, marking the exam as over. When he glanced up at the clock, he noticed that he had been squared off against her for over 15 minutes...longer than even his black belts. He would hate to see what she, now an orange belt, would be like when she achieved red or black. She had ceertainly appeared to be a fast learner, from what he could see, and a faint tinge of pride flowed through him that he had fostered it.

"Tomorrow then, Master Yoo?" she asked with unplacable accent of hers.

"Yes, Sally, tomorrow. You did phenomenal," he admitted, shooing her away as he prepared for the final class of the late evening.
