Dallas by Night

A Game of Intrigue and Deceit, Passion and Damnation

Those who have played the White Wolf game Vampire: The Masquerade will find this game easy and familiar. The game is based on the interaction of Vampires within a city run by the Camarilla, an organization of Vampires that attempts to conceal the existence of Undead from mortals through a Tradition/Survival Instinct called The Masquerade. Players assume positions as one among the damned of Dallas, and jostle for power and notoriety there.

See the Learn About Dallas Page for more information about the surrounding game area.

The Game

Players create their characters by the rules within Vampire: The Masquerade, with additional information used from the Players Handbook. Some minor exceptions should be noted. Within this game we are trying to stress the differences within the Clans of the city and how they operate. There are no Player Characters as Caitiff because of this, and it is asked that Characters use only their Clan disciplines when creating their characters.

If you are unfamiliar with the actual role playing game Vampire the Masquerade, you may send a basic description of how you envision your character. Based on your description the Storyteller will create a character sheet for you and forward pertinent information details to you.

If you do not have a copy of the main rule book, Vampire, The Masquerade Version 2300, published by White Wolf, it is highly recommended that you acquire it so that you may understand the nuances of the game. One can be purchased at most comic book shops or gaming stores, or online from White Wolf.  In addition to being an engaging read, it also makes for a lovely conversation piece when certain visitors arrive unannounced.

The Dallas by Night game takes place in two formats. First, the Vampire the Masquerade RPG Newsgroup. Here is where the majority of the plots and actions will be written about. If you have an idea for a story/conflict with another character or an NPC (Non-Player Character controlled by the Storyteller), simply e-mail the Storyteller the plan. Then, between the Storyteller and any other players involved, the results can be determined. Then the story can be written!

Second, storylines are formulated in the Chat sessions. You will need an IRC Chat client to participate in these sessions.  The Chat links on this site will take you into the DbN Game room if you use MS Chat.  If you have a different IRC Client, here are the settings to get into the sessions:
Server: chat.role-play.net
Room: #Vampire_SuccubusClub

Most of the Chat sessions will be simple 'hanging out' events for the Kindred of Dallas. These 'meetings' will usually be hosted in one of the various spots in the Dallas area that have been declared Elysium, neutral ground where vampires meet. Unless otherwise announced, assume that the weekly scheduled game meetings are of this type. Other meetings may be arranged for special occasions.  The scheduled chat sessions are held Every Saturday at 11:00 PM EST.  The core of the game takes place on the Newsgroup, so it is not necessary to attend the chat sessions to be a full part of the game.

Game Play in the Chat Sessions

A system is necessary for all players to understand what other characters are doing.  Here is the system we use so that we can avoid confusion in the chat sessions.

Chatiquette Explanation Example
[Action] For Actions the character performs [Looks around the city street cautiously]
::Thought:: For thoughts that would be obvious to others watching the person ::What a bunch of dead heads::
Person: Used when speaking to a specific person. This will save confusion in chat Tony: Are we supposed to be in this part of town?
<Person> Used when the storyteller gives the player a Non-Player Character to interact with or control [Bob]Tony: Ya! I thought this area was off limits or sumthin....
[PH] Used when talking to a character over a phone [PH]Sasha: Yes, Sasha? This is Randolf. Is 6th St and Elm off limits?
@@ Used when a certain character is not around the rest of those participating in the story. Everyone is in the Mansion enjoying the party, except for Sasha who is at her Haven. Other symbols such as % and & can be assigned by the storyteller if there are more than one set of separated parties

@ [Paces her home impatiently] @

@[Speaks to the empty room] Why am I so completely alone?...@

%[Walks down the street after leaving the mansion]%

Powers, and Skills in the Chat sessions

There are many different Powers and Skill that a player may want his/her character to use during a session. As time goes by, we will develop a shorthand system for more of these abilities...yet to save confusion, the following should be used.

[AN] Animalism
[AU] Auspex
[CE] Celerity
[DE] Dementate
[DO] Dominate
[FO] Fortitude
[OB] Obfuscate
[PO] Potence
[PR] Presence
[PN] Protean
[TH] Thaumaturgy

Simply private message the Storyteller what you are attempting first, and it will be resolved. If it will have little effect on others around you feel free to just add the short form to your character name while using it. If it could have an effect on other characters then wait for the Storytellers OK, before adding the short form.

Example wHo?[OB4] [Sneaks around the room snickering to himself]

Ryk[AU1] ::Where is that darned Malkavian???::
